Question
The HTTP response code 404 is specifically excluded from the CDS HTTP Response Codes.
Is it non-compliant to use HTTP response code 404 when it seems appropriate?
Should HTTP response code 404 be included in the CDS HTTP Response Codes?
Answer
HTTP response code 404 is currently excluded for reasons of specificity and security. The DSB acknowledges the arguments for the use of the 404 code in certain circumstances.
Decision Proposal - Extension of Supported HTTP Response Codes for Enhanced Error Handling was put forward to address this issue. Consultation on this issue is now closed. Feedback received will be considered and an initial position will be drafted and published in due course.
