Introduction
The following notes on the CommonPhoneNumber schema, and its fields, are gathered from Subject Matter Expert guidance and responses to participant support issues.
Deriving fields from a phone number
If a Data Holder (DH) does not hold the country code (optional), area code (conditional), number (mandatory) in separate fields and only holds a phone number (which may or may not contain all the required splits), then any specific assumptions for the area code of these numbers should be provided, otherwise these numbers are unusable, and no record should be given.
Fax numbers in CommonPhoneNumber
Customers with Fax numbers and direct numbers should utilise the OTHER enumeration value so that, for example, an Accredited Data Recipient (ADR) does not attempt to ring a fax line.
CommonPhoneNumber schema - fullNumber
The standards define the fullNumber field as fully formatted phone number with country code, area code, number and extension incorporated. This is formatted according to section 5.1.4. of RFC 3966
CommonPhoneNumber schema - countryCode field
For the CommonPhoneNumber schema countryCode field the default value, if not provided, is +61.
If data for countryCode field is unavailable then the field need not be included at all as it is optional. You can set it to +61 or null if you like, however supplying '+' would not be valid .
